Laura Kinsale's Lessons in French is a well-told historical romance, which also has it's humorous side. At the age of twenty-seven, Lady Callista Taillefaire has settled into the life of a country spinster, breeding cattle on her estate. But her quiet existence is turned upside down when a love from the past, Trevelyan d'Augustin, comes back into her life. Not wanting to be a "spoiler" I just want to say that Lessons in French has everything a historical novel should have: history about the era, romance, peppered with a little suspense and wit.
