Have you ever dreamed about living in Jane Austen's world and wondered what she might do under certain circumstances? How to dress? How to pay a morning call? How to attend a ball? How to run a house? How to throw a dinner party?
Well, now there's a darling little book called,"The Jane Austen Handbook, A Sensible Yet Elegant Guide to Her World" by Margaret C. Sullivan. It is absolutely the cutest little thing and just full of Victorian information, all 224 pages.
I can't even begin to tell you all the information that's in this very sweet and pretty book. There's just too much to mention. But I do highly recommend it to all Austen fans. It's a book you should not be without if you want to really understand her works and life.
On a scale from one to ten, I would give this little jewel a 10+. If you are thinking about buying it, don't hesitate! You will be thrilled!
This book sounds wonderful! Have you joined the Everything Austen Challenge? I think this one qualifies! Thanks:)
ReplyDeleteMs. Lucy- I haven't joined. I have so many books to read and review right now, that it's taking up most of my time.
ReplyDeleteThis book is REALLY precious. Every Austen fan should own one. No kidding! I LOVE my copy.
It looks darling, and since my daughter is beginning high school and will no doubt be reading Austen as part of her literature classes, I think this will enrich the books for her. I love books like this -- I also have The Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in Regency and Victorian England (Kristine Hughes) and What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew: From Fox Hunting to Whist (Daniel Pool); both of them are fun, quick references to a bygone era.
ReplyDeleteJoanne- You have mentioned some wonderful books. Very good suggestions!!
ReplyDeleteThis would probably be perfect for me.... the "beginner" Austen fan.... thanks for sharing this. :)
ReplyDeleteSheila- It would be the perfect Austen "companion" for all readers, especially, beginners.
ReplyDeleteHi, there. I have just nominated you for the Kreativ Blogger award. Please check out the details at A Reading Collection. Here's my link. http://areadingcollection.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteMy wife showed me how to enjoy Austen. I do not know why men are usually afraid to say "I like Jane Austen" (at least in my country, Spain).
ReplyDeleteI think it is time to recover Austen for all readers. As a matter of fact, it is time to recover Victorian Writers.
Thank you for your blog.
Helen- Thank you so much for the wonderful honor.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Cook- I'm so glad to hear you are an Austen fan! The Victorian writers are a somewhat forgotten bunch. I wish everyone would come to appreciate them. You just can't find fine writing like that today....much of it very profound, and surprisingly contemporary.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love Jane Austen. My favorite is Sense and Sensibility followed closely by Pride and Prejudice. Awesome books.
ReplyDeleteCindy- Those are also two of my favorites. Austen is just awesome.
ReplyDeleteI would like to enter the Jane Austen giveaway. As for living in her world, the clothing would irritate me. Looks like layers of clothing and stiff clothing at that. I am a "relaxed fit and soft cloth" person.
